Assorted musings of the Hodzilla blog

There's a mix of recent posts and old stuff I wrote years ago in different and sundry places.

I've signed up for Janathon 2013

Posted Jan 2, 2013

I'm going to have a good shot at #janathon - running (or some kind of exercise), and blogging about it, every day in January.

Janathon day 1: New year resolutions and Janathon; and Spractice!

Posted Jan 1, 2013

I have a few New Year's resolutions in mind, and they're about to collide. This is going to be quick!

The Paleo Diet, plus our lifesaving "quick win" recipes

Posted Dec 30, 2012

For slightly over a month now, we have been following the so-called "Paleo Diet". On the whole it has been very successful, so I thought I'd jot down some notes on the subject. Therefore, here's a quick introduction to what it is, together with a few recipes and ideas we've had that have made our lives easier.

Pics from Blenheim Triathlon 2012: a timely reminder for entering 2013

Posted Dec 30, 2012

How funny! While looking through some pictures on my computer, I came across a slug of well over 200 pictures taken with my SLR by my son, then 10, when I did the Blenheim Triathlon in support of MS Trust back in June 2012. Hidden in this huge pile of random shots were some pretty decent pictures; I'll make a photographer of the boy yet!

The Phoenix Artist Club: great venue, Christmassy fun!

Posted Dec 25, 2012

The story so far: Colin, pianist with "Two Flutes and a Flirt", managed to get the group a slot at the Phoenix Artist Club's "Christmas Spectacular". A few rehearsals, and a few more bottles of wine, and we were ready to give it our best shot. With the gig booked for 23rd December, if you were to argue that Two Flutes and a Flirt left their first gig of 2012 rather late in the year, I could only agree!

Come and see us: Two Flutes and a Flirt, Christmas Spectacular!

Posted Dec 12, 2012

I am very excited! Next Sunday, 23rd December, from 5 to around 7:30PM, I am playing in a little show at the historic Phoenix Artist Club, with a couple of friends (Nicky Bolster and Colin Savage) in our group, dubbed "Two Flutes and a Flirt". We have been playing together for quite a few years now, and I always look forward to getting together with these people as they are such multi-talented and entertaining company.

Kitten-Gate: a walk on the wild side!

Posted Nov 4, 2012

Blue-eyesOn Thursday morning we had a family outing to the vet's to give our new kitten - provisionally named Florence - the once-over. We registered her details with the receptionist, and took her in to be seen. Our vet picked her up and started the usual prodding and poking, then she looked up and said she thought the name might not be quite so appropriate as she was in fact a he!

Welcome to our new and rather furry family member

Posted Oct 31, 2012

We have a new cat! She is a rather pretty, extremely furry Ragdoll kitten. For those in the know, I understand she could be described as a mitted, bluepoint bi-colour Ragdoll. (I hope that this will make more sense to me soon). She also, as is just about apparent from the picture, has rather striking blue eyes!

Lost in music

There are things we all have to drag ourselves through at times: paperwork, ironing, work at times... This short post is a reminder that this doesn't always have to be the case!

(At least) three things I hate about iOS6

Posted Oct 5, 2012

With all the uproar about Apple's new mapping approach, attention has been diverted from other aspects of the latest iteration of iOS - version 6. In this short post I hope to make a start at redressing this balance! So, without further ado...

Blenheim Triathlon, 2012

Posted Aug 10, 2012

Talking with a colleague earlier about triathlons, I was reminded how much I had enjoyed my first-ever personal triathon experience, completing the Blenheim Sprint Triathlon earlier this year. Here is a brief account of what happened, and a fun site I found on the way!

Olympic tickets: families of 5 need not apply!

Posted Aug 7, 2012

20120807-012624.jpgWe had a lovely family outing on Saturday, to see the Women's Olympic Triathlon at Hyde Park. It seemed like a natural choice, after all the work that went into training for the Blenheim Triathlon, earlier in the year. Then, having got a taste for it and fired up by the genuinely awesome (an over-used word, but appropriate here) Opening Ceremony and excellent performance of the UK athletes, we thought it might be fun to go to see some other Olympic events.

Not-so-smartphones

Posted Aug 3, 2012

Smartphones have taken over our lives. I would struggle without mine: it plays a part in just about everything I do, helping me with organisation, communication, music, exercise, navigation and even metronome duties! (Worries over smartphone addiction may be the subject of a future blog post, who knows?) As a self-proclaimed geek as well, I always agonise over what phone to get when the last one loses the fight.

Spotify and Squeezebox

Posted Aug 1, 2012

There I was, mulling over how best to "break the ice" with my new blog: what could I write about that combined most, or perhaps all, of the loves in my life - home/family, music, exercise, ... *cough* gadgets? Then - a flash of inspiration: Spotify and Squeezebox! I listen to a lot of music - on the train, out and about, in the mornings and evenings, when running. These days, nearly all of it comes from Spotify - through my phone when I am away, or one of our Squeezeboxes at home. Let me tell you a bit about these two, excellent and thoroughly recommended, creations.
